How a 12-passenger van compares to the alternatives

Most groups of ten to twelve arrive at one of four options. Here is the honest comparison, because the right answer is not always us.

Two SUVs. Roughly the same total cost once you add the second rental and the second tank of gas, and it splits the group in two. Somebody gets lost, somebody arrives twenty minutes late, and every stop takes twice as long to coordinate. One vehicle keeps the group together and keeps the day on schedule.

A chartered minibus with a driver. Typically several hundred dollars a day for a group that does not need a professional driver, and you are on the operator's schedule rather than your own. Worth it above roughly twenty-five people. Below that, self-drive is cheaper and more flexible.

Rideshare. Fine for two or three people, unworkable for twelve with luggage. You are ordering three vehicles per leg and paying surge pricing at exactly the moments you need to move.

An airport rental counter. The counter is where the quoted rate stops matching the final total. Surcharges, mandatory coverage and young-driver fees routinely add 30 to 50% by the time you sign, and a reserved "van or similar" is a vehicle class rather than a specific vehicle, so availability is not guaranteed. What to know before you drive it

The Transit is the easiest 12-passenger van to drive, and there are still four things worth knowing before you pull out.

Height, not width. The van is about 7 feet 6 inches tall. It is no wider than a large SUV, so lanes and standard parking spots are a non-issue, but drive-thrus and some older parking garages are. Check clearance signs at hotel garages before you commit to the ramp.

It parks like a long SUV. Backup camera, blind spot monitoring and lane-keep assist are all standard, so the tall roofline is the only real adjustment. Give yourself a little extra room the first time you reverse into a spot.

Load the back row last. There is cargo room behind the rear bench for roughly 12 to 15 bags. Bags go in before people so nobody is climbing over luggage, and the rear A/C controls stay reachable from the back rows.

Any licensed driver 25 or older. No commercial or special license, no endorsement, no test. A regular U.S. driver's license is all that is required, and more than one person in your group can be added as a driver.
